Republicans versus America

Okay, this new Gallup Poll via UPI deserves some attention:

Aug. 14 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump's approval rating dropped to its lowest level in his presidency Monday, according to Gallup. In a survey of 1,500 adults 18 and older, Trump is supported by 34 percent with 61 percent disapproving of him, also a low. He is backed by 77 percent of Republicans...

How is it that 61 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump, but 77 percent of Republicans APPROVE of Trump?

There is a fundamental disagreement between what Americans want for America and what Republicans want for America.

Also, if 77% of Republicans approve of Trump there is something terribly wrong with 77% of Republicans.

Certainly 77% of the Republicans I know do not support Trump, so another possibility is that 77% of Republicans do not in fact support Trump, but they say so to pollsters out of some sense of solidarity with whatever they mistakenly believe the Republican Party represents. In that case, Trump's actual support would be a lot less than 34%.
